JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Beekeeper

REPORTS TO: Farm Manager

HOURLY WAGE: $12.50/hr

SUPERVISES: Not Applicable 

HOURS OF POSITION: 4-5 hours per week as needed, February through September. Typically 0-3 in winter months and 4-8 in summer months. (capped at 140 hours)

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Physically support ICNC’s apiary, ensuring that hives are available for learning by the students of the Beginning Beekeeping Series class. Attend field days to support class members, as directed by the beekeeper.  Help with building and repairing equipment as needed. Help with honey harvest and winterization of the hives at the end of the season.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Be available to support the beekeeper during field work in the apiary
  • Be able to independently check hives and support class members in doing so during field days 
  • Complete early spring hive checks and prepare hives for opening
  • If needed, construct or maintain equipment as directed.
  • Identify and address any hive health concerns
  • Attend Beginning Beekeeping Classes to maintain current working knowledge of material and support students.
  • Support the Beekeeper in completing the annual honey harvest and winterize hives
  • Keep any records necessary as directed by Beekeeper
  • Practice safety in and around the apiary
  • Identifies needs (such as sugar, tools, etc) in a timely manner to supervisor 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Belief in the Nature Center’s mission and a healthy appreciation for the outdoors. Represents ICNC in the most positive manner with all people, both personally and professionally. Independent worker. Ability to work with bees and all aspects of beekeeping. Ability to follow specific directions and work closely with others. Ability to use appropriate safety equipment applicable for beekeeping. Ability to accomplish tasks in all weather conditions.

GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Constant (67-100%) outdoor, physical work in a variety of weather conditions. Constant (67-100%) reaching, standing, grasping, finger dexterity.  Occasionally (34-66%) lifting and carrying 50 pounds. Occasionally (34-66%) operating mechanical machinery including climbing to mount equipment, pushing, pulling, and grasping with hands and fingers, using feet and legs to push pedals, and ability to react quickly. May occasionally (10-33%) be required to travel off-site to complete duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with beekeeping required. Must have transportation to and from Etzel Sugar Grove Farm.
