Willow Bases and Beyond – Part 2

Create beautiful and useful willow art in this Two-Part Introduction to Stake and Strand Basketmaking!

April 19 – Part 2:
Weaving the sides, rim, and handles: Using a base from the March 15 class, Participants will learn a variety of weaves utilized in stake and strand basketry, such as the three-rod wale, and French randing, or slewing. Learning to complete a border and handles tops off the day, and weavers will take home a handy basket for use in the home and garden.

Materials: A sharp carving knife, sharp pruners. If you have them, please bring a bodkin and basketry shears. The teacher will share hers if you do not. No need to purchase, but if you are interested, check this link.

Please bring your lunch, snacks, and beverages. Please bring an old sheet that we will soak, wring out, and store your willow in while you work. Wear old pants that can get stained.

Fee: $175 Non-members $160 Members. Pre-registration is required and closes March 6th. Space is limited. The second part of this class will be held on Sunday, April 19th from 9 to 5pm.

In Part 1, held on March 15, teacher Mary Kopecky will lead participants as they make two or more basket bases and shapes. One of these bases will be used in the 2nd part of the class, where we learn to weave the sides, rim, and handle(s). Participants will learn to make a Catalan base and a traditional round base with spokes.
