Willow Class: Stake and Strand Basket Using a Wooden Base

June 21 @ 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

In this willow weaving class, participants will start with an approximately 12-inch diameter wooden base that has been drilled with holes for the uprights. You will learn to insert and turn down the uprights, and then you will learn a technique called upsetting to get the uprights in the correct position for side weaving. You will then learn two weaves utilized in stake and strand basketry-the three-rod wale and French randing. You will finish your basket with a border, and if time allows, a handle. Also If time allows, we will add a removable foot to better preserve the basket bottom from wear. Your finished product will be a sturdy basket for a variety of uses.

Materials: Lunch, snacks, and beverages, sharp hand pruners, spray bottle with water, and an old sheet that we will soak to store your willow in while you work. You will need a tool called a rapping iron, but you can make a substitute with a heavy screwdriver and a hammer – please bring those. If you have them, please bring a bodkin and basketry shears – the teacher will share if you do not have them – no need to purchase, but if you are interested, check this out.
Finally, wear old pants that can get stained with willow tannin.

Fee: $130 Non-members $120 Members. Pre-registration is required and closes June 14th. Space is limited.
