Urban chickens provide you with fresh eggs that you gather right in your own backyard. Many local municipalities now allow hens to be kept in city limits upon successful completion of the Backyard Chicken Workshop at Indian Creek Nature Center. Learn the basics required to safely and successfully raise chickens in urban and suburban areas. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, enabling them to receive a permit to legally keep chickens in Cedar Rapids, Marion, and other neighboring communities.
Join us for Iowa’s premier beekeeping class! This seven session series is designed for individuals serious about starting a beekeeping hobby. The series will take the participant through the annual cycle of beekeeping from establishing a hive to harvesting and marketing the honey produced. The class members will be actively involved in learning activities by working in our Educational Apiary at Indian Creek Nature Center. Attendance at all classes and a commitment to recommended reading and regular hive inspections are essential for successful beekeeping.
