POSITION TITLE: Program Assistant (Fresh Air programs)

REPORTS TO: Education Manager

HOURS HOURS OF POSITION: Afternoons to early evening

STATUS: Part Time, Hourly

WAGE: $15.00/hour

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The program assistant leads and supervises programs at Indian Creek Nature Center three days a week for several hours a day throughout the months of March, April, May, September and October. This person also prepares materials and curriculum prior to the program and ensures facilities are adequately set-up ahead of the program and torn-down and cleaned-up afterwards. 


  • Leads Fresh Air programs for youth, prepares materials, sets up facilities as needed, and cleans up from the program as required.
  • Develops seasonally appropriate themes to guide the day, while also prioritizing and supporting the students’ interests.
  • Plans relevant outdoor immersive learning activities that are developmentally appropriate.
  • Is flexible and able to adapt plans to capitalize on educational opportunities that arise. 
  • Is skilled at creating engaging indoor activities when inclement weather is present.
  • Encourages, supports, and educates children during their learning adventures.
  • Helps children develop basic life skills, encouraging appropriate social interaction with their peers.
  • Promotes a positive and safe learning environment.
  • Is responsible and confident, being solely in charge of participants, with an emphasis on safety.
  • Uses clearly defined safety rules and protocols, including drop off/pick procedures, expectations for behavior and a plan for dangerous weather conditions.   
  • Provides consistent and frequent communication to families about their child’s progress,  or any concern that may arise. 
  • Provides families with a weekly summary of lessons and activities their child participated in.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Energetic, professional demeanor, positive attitude and motivation. Basic knowledge of outdoor skills, regional ecology and environmental principles. Enjoy working with young children and the ability to meet them at their level.  Adept at identifying and solving problems. Good oral and written communication skills and ability to share and teach information. Ability and desire to be outdoors in all weather. Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work afternoons into the early evening.

Preference will be given to those that can work from 11:45am-6:30pm but, if necessary, could be split into two openings of 11:45am-3:45pm and 3:15pm-6:30pm.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Love of working with and teaching children. Ability to pass a background check. Must be 18 years old and have a high-school diploma. Have or willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.  Experience working with children ages Kindergarten to 5th grade.
