PUBLIC PROGRAM-SHOOTING STAR EVENT-TIME 2pm--COST:FREE--Director Rich Patterson will lead a stroll on the new Sense of Wonder trail. Enjoy wildflowers as you visit nature activity areas designed for children and adults to enjoy. Learn about permeable paving, rain gardens and sustainable features included in the trail's design. CREEKSIDE CONCERT-IOWA VANGUARD JAZZ COLLECTIVE-7:30 PM - Bring a lawn chair or blanket and a picnic basket with your favorite snacks and beverages and join us on the lawn for the first of our 2010 Creekside Concerts! Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective brings its 16-piece big band sound to the banks of Indian Creek playing arrangements by Count Basie, Duke Ellington and more, along with original compositions and arrangements. Learn about three lenses you can use to see the Nature Center in new ways. Ray Anderson of the State Geologic Survey Bureau will share a geological lens; David Brenzel, a project leader for the Iowa Ice Age Sloth Project, will discuss the Ice Age lens and Jan Aiels will share the human history of ICNC land. PUBLIC PROGRAM-TODDLER TRACKS:BIRD BUSINESS (for children 18-36 months accompanied by an adult)-10AM-12NOON-MEMBER CHILD:$4; NONMEMBER CHILD:$5; PARENT:FREE-Explore the wonderful world of birds with your toddler! Share discoveries with interactive play using colors, sounds and touch. Feel feathers, sort eggs and listen to a story. Go on a bird-watching walk along our new Sense of Wonder Trail. PUBLIC PROGRAM-BUG ACADEMY-1PM-MEMBER:$5; NONMEMBER:$8-Bug Academy will emphasize hands-on activities to find insects and create a database of all known insects present on Nature Center property. Build a homemade Berlese funnel and various types of traps. Enjoy a hike, learn about insect habitats and check traps that were set earlier. Take home your own beetle trap!
