| PUBLIC PROGRAM-THE BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY OF SHARP-SHINNED & COOPER'S HAWKS: LIFE IN A BIRD-EAT-BIRD WORLD-7 PM-Dr. Timothy C. Roth II, of the University of Nevada-Reno Department of Biology, will share his research on the behavioral ecology of hawks. He has studied the hunting behavior and winter ecology of birds of prey and the songbirds they prey upon, ecological influences on brain size and memory in birds, and the ecological and evolutionary biology of sleep across species. He will discuss the predatory behavior of hawks and how his research allows us to understand how prey and predators interact at different spatial scales, what hawks need to survive, and what aspects of modern landscapes might influence their populations and success. | PUBLIC PROGRAM-PRAIRIE SEEDS FOR THE YARD-10 AM TO 2 PM-FEE: $10/LARGE PAPER GROCERY BAG-After many years of successful prairie restoration the Nature Center has an abundance of seed available to help others establish their own prairie. Bring a paper bag to collect seed into. Stop in at the Creekside Shop to receive your "picking license." | PUBLIC PROGRAM-SHOOTING STAR EVENT: GIVING BACK: EARTH DAY AT 40-2 PM-FREE-Earth Day, an event that changed hearts and minds of people worldwide, reminds us that everyone depends on a healthy earth for water, food, and air. Many require the planet's beauty for inspiration and serenity. Following 1970's Earth Day, the Cedar Rapids Garden Club began a 37-year supportive relationship with the Nature Center that's continuing with a new floodplain forest restoration. Through their endowment support, Shooting Star Society members also nourish the Nature Center. Please join the Cedar Rapids Garden Club and Shooting Star Society to help restore a forest while honoring all who work for a healthy environment. The day will include a walk, a tree planting, and a short program. Wear appropriate clothes if participating in tree planting. Observers are welcome and encouraged to attend. Learn of water's complexities and its various networks. Who has the right to decide what happens to this vital resource? How can we ensure its future availability? This session of the Northwest Earth Institute discussion course considers the effects of modern industrial eating habits on culture, society, and ecological systems.
